Final Project Experience

I am very happy how the final project turned out.  For most of the semester it was really slow going, but in the last few weeks it really came together into something I am excited to put onto my portfolio.  It was definitely hard to give the project the time it probably deserved while having a whole other studio project to balance.

I really enjoyed learning Adobe XD and putting an app together as well as really thinking about user journeys.  I do wish I was able to learn some other skills/knowledge from the project such as basic coding concepts, or other UX specific prototyping tools.  Also, I would have liked for our group to be slightly larger (we only had 3 people) in order to go more in depth in the CS side of the project.  All in all I had a good experience and I’m glad to have done the project.


Thoughts on UX Class

This class definitely made me much more versed in the world of UX design.  Before the class I had a pretty vague idea of all it entailed and its implications.  I really enjoyed the different discussions we had throughout the semester about data sharing, AI, futuristic topics, etc.  It opened my eyes to many other considerations to think about while designing.

The class structure (only having one class a week) made it a little hard to focus on the projects, so I wish it could have been split up throughout the week, or even a module-style class for part of the semester.  I think the wallet project at the beginning of the semester was not super valuable for the ID students, but I do see how it could be for CS students with not as much exposure to design thinking.  Maybe during that time the two disciplines could be split up and the ID students could be learning about basic coding or something—definitely something I wish I had learned a little of.


Intelligence on Tap: Artificial Intelligence as a New Design Material

This article brought up some good points about AI’s uses and limitations.  It discussed how it is important for a designer to understand what AI is good and not good at, similar to use of materials.  I think understanding when not to use or limit AI is just as important as its use.  Every product does not need to predict what the user wants, and if it has that functionality, it becomes important for the user to understand why the machine made the decision that it did.


UX Design Innovation: Challenges for Working with Machine Learning as a Design Material

I think it was interesting how this article said how designers often see AI and ML as “black magic.”  As a designer this “black magic” often is in other complex systems as well (electronics, production techniques)  when a designer does not have a thorough knowledge of specifics of a process.  I know I definitely have made some projects where I was like “the circuit board will go in there” without actually knowing what exactly that entails.  AI and ML are very similar, in that designers need to gain an adequate understanding of their strengths, uses, and limitations in order to use them in their designs.  It is important that designers gain this understanding of AI as its uses broaden in the future.


Machines Learning Culture

I thought this was interesting how AI can evaluate art and culture, but does it in a very different way than humans.  As humans we usually look at art and culture with a context of emotion, connecting things with that human perspective. AI does not do this and evaluates things much more mathematically.  This could have interesting applications as a tool for artists to make possible decisions that they would not initially think about.

The Engineering of Experience:

I thought this article was interesting, pointing out how jobs and now our personal lives have become so structured and streamlined.  This focus on efficiency and “time is money” has squeezed out simple pleasures and much of the joy of some activities.  I think as far as jobs go, the careers that have so optimized (factory work/skilled labor) are eventually, unfortunately going to be taken over by AI and robotics.  This will leave jobs that need personal interaction.  I think this gives a big opportunity for designers to design the experiences around these positions, designing how these employees will navigate systems within the workplace and how they can more enjoy their work.


Making Sense of Experience:

This article discussed the relationship between an experience and the user’s “dialogue”.  I think this dialogue between the product/experience and a user’s thoughts is what design tries to address.  When designing an experience, we should determine what that internal dialogue will be (through user testing, research, etc. ) and then try to design the experience to match that.  This will allow the user to easily navigate an experience, making it feel natural.

Wallet Concepts

Jad Sidi, Nathan Eggleston:

Initial Ideation Sketches: Concepts explore different ways to organize a physical wallet, as well as ways to change how payment is made.

Concept 1: Four sided, square chip card–allows one card to be 4 methods of payment


Concept 2: Sensor embedded within wallet allows card reader to detect different cards “loaded” into wallet.  Payment method is selected on card reader.


Concept 3:  Circular disc consolidates 6+ cards into a single object.  User spins through to select chip, which is then put into machine.
